After years of maintaining and installing central heating systems, one question keeps coming up: Should we flush our system, and if so, what's the best method?

Flushing your central heating system is essential for a few reasons:

  • Radiator Issues: If your radiators aren’t heating properly, it’s often due to air in the system. This leads to iron-oxide (or sludge, magnetite, rust) building up, which can block pipes, reduce water flow, and make radiators less efficient. It can also strain your boiler, reducing its lifespan.

  • New Boiler Installations: A flush is required when installing a new boiler to keep the warranty valid. Manufacturers often ask for this to be documented, and if it’s not, the warranty could be voided.

  • Corrosion Signs: If your system shows signs of corrosion, it’s usually caused by incorrect chemical levels in the water, which can increase acidity and damage the system.

There are several ways to flush a system, but not all are equally effective:

  • Cold Water Flush: This involves connecting the system to the cold water supply and pushing mains water through the system. It’s generally ineffective, as the water will take the easiest route, often bypassing the problem areas.

  • Chemical Flush: A cleansing agent is added to the system to break up debris and iron-oxide. It can be left in the system for anywhere from 1 hour to a month. While it can help clean the system, it might move debris around, potentially causing future issues if not drained properly. A magnetic filter is recommended to catch any debris before it reaches the boiler.

  • Power Flush: This is the most thorough method. A high-powered pump is used to circulate a cleansing agent through the system, removing debris and flushing it out until the water runs clear. It’s the most effective way to clean your system and is recommended by manufacturers to maintain warranties.
